“BLACK BONNET” BRASS WELSH MINER’S LAMP
Please select price with shipping
This solid brass lamp is made using the traditional Welsh specifications. In the late 1800s the chimney was often made of mild steel and then enameled to prevent sparking when it came in contact with rock in the mines. This model also includes an additional label on the chimney where the colliery, or mine ’s, identifying numbers would have been engraved and a hasp lock on the side. This would have been sealed once the lamp was lit and before the miner took it underground. These hasp locks were replaced with magnetic locks in the 20th century. The Black Bonnet historic model is offered as an attractive choice for presentation and use in the home. The base of this lamp is tooled from solid brass because brass does not spark when it hits rock and is therefore the safest metal to use underground. The lamp is functional for personal use and burns lamp oil (kerosene). Each lamp contains a single internal gauze, comes with instructions, a brief history, weighs more than 2.75 pounds, is 10“ high and 3“ in diameter.
